Short Biography

Born in Solothurn (Switzerland) on the August, 28th 1970. He holds a Law degree (1993) and a doctorate from the Salamanca University (1997). Since 2010 he is a full professor of Criminal Law at the Faculty of Juridical and Social Sciences of the Castilla-La Mancha University in Toledo (Spain), of which he was vice-dean for legal studies (2003-2004). He has participated in conferences or lectures in Spanish and foreign universities. In 2005-2006 he was an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation´s research fellow, in 2008 of the Max-Planck Association and in 2010 of the Hanse Wissenschaftskolleg. He did research stages as Research Fellow or Visiting Scholar at the University of Cologne (between 1994-1996 and 2005-2006), at the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich (2004), at the Max-Planck-Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg (2008), at the Institute of Criminology of the University of Cambridge (2009, 2012), at the Institute for Advanced Study of Delmenhorst (Bremen) (2010), at the University of Kiel (2013) and at the European University Institute of Florence (2016). He is a member of several Spanish and foreign Scientific Committees. Investigator of the European and International Criminal Law Institute of the Castilla-La Mancha University and of the Institute of Forensic Sciences and Security of the Autonomous University of Madrid. Director of the Postgraduate Course on “Economic and Corporate Criminal Law” of the Castilla-La Mancha University and of the Collection “Biblioteca Básica de Derecho Penal y Ciencias Penales” edited by Iustel.

Research Abstract

His main interests lie in the general principles of Criminal Law and Criminal Policy and, on the other hand, in the corporate criminal law. Currently, he works on the topic “Neuroscience and Criminal Law” He has written around forty articles and several monographs such as Prevención general e individualización judicial de la pena (1999; 2. Ed., 2016), La tentativa en la autoria mediata y en la actio libera in causa (2003), Culpabilidad y fines de la pena (2008), Responsabilidad penal por omisión del empresario (2009). He is also co-autor and coordinator of Lecciones y materiales para el estudio del Derecho penal. Tomo II. Teoría del delito (2. Ed., 2015). He has edited or coedited Cuestiones actuales de Derecho penal económico; Terrorismo y Estado de Derecho (2010); Cuestiones actuales de Derecho penal empresarial (2010), El Derecho penal económico y empresarial ante los desafíos de la sociedad mundial del riesgo (2010), Neurociencias y Derecho penal (2013), Crisis financiera y Derecho penal económico (2014), Legalidad y defensa. Garantías constitucionales del Derecho y la Justicia penal (2015), Halcones y Palomas: corrupción y delincuencia económica (2015). He has also translated a good number of articles from German to Spanish.
